THE BEST ICT FOR PRIMARY CHILDREN

- INTERACTIVE WHITEBOARDS:

Interactive whiteboards are tools used commonly in education that link a computer to a projector and a touch-sensitive screen. This allows the user to become a human input device and control the computer functions via the touch screen, while projecting the computer images on a large surface. It is ideal for education settings.

Advantages
• Clear graphics
• Interactivity for teachers and students
• Projection of computer images on a larger screen for audience viewing
• Manipulation of computer functions while standing (rather than from the computer)
• Incorporation of video and images into traditional teaching lesson

- COMPUTERS

A computer is a general purpose device that can be programmed to carry out a set of arithmetic or logical operations. Since a sequence of operations can be readily changed, the computer can solve more than one kind of problem.
Conventionally, a computer consists of at least one processing element, typically a central processing unit (CPU) and some form of memory. The processing element carries out arithmetic and logic operations, and a sequencing and control unit that can change the order of operations based on stored information. Peripheral devices allow information to be retrieved from an external source, and the result of operations saved and retrieved.

Advantages:

Access to Information
One of the most important features of a computer is the access to information it provides. Because the Internet acts as a virtual library, students can have access to nearly any piece of information imaginable. This can be highly advantageous in the classroom as it can enhance the information on any classroom subject. The downside is that sometimes students will stumble across unreliable information online.

Saving Time
Computers also save time in many ways. Not only can computers access millions of pages of information on the Internet, but they can do this in an incredibly fast time. What once might have taken hours of library research might now only take a few minutes on the computer. In addition to the Internet, tools such as word processors, presentation software, and spreadsheets have added efficiency. They eliminate much of the time that traditional writing, presentations, and creating tables and forms once required.

Tutoring
For teachers dealing with large classrooms, there is not always enough time to spend with individual students, so computers can serve as a tutor for the students. Many educational websites are designed to tutor students, providing everything from step-by-step explanations to interactive problems.

Online Tools
Many online tools can be used by teachers to make learning more fun, interesting, and easy to understand. Teachers can add flavor to any lesson, whether with additional pictures and videos of a concept she is teaching, or with 3-D programs, animations, and other educational tools. Classroom-oriented games can be found at sites such as ClassTools.net and FunBrain.
Another benefit of having access to the Internet in schools is for teachers to access plagiarism checkers, which usually only require a simple copy-and-paste action by the teacher. Online checkers include free sites such as Dupli Checker (see Resources).

- ONLINE TOOLS

BLOGS:
Blogs are web logs that are updated on a regular basis by their author. They can contain information related to a specific topic. In some cases blogs are used as daily diaries about people's personal lives, political views, or even as social commentaries. The truth of the matter is that blogs can be shaped into whatever you, the author, want them to be.
Blog's give you an opportunity to write content that is unique to you and your practice. While some people are uncomfortable with self promotion, your blog gives you an occasion to interact with your visitors while promoting who you are and what you do.

Advantages:
- Publishing writings and giving them feedback
- Sharing information from the classroom
- Useful for recounts from trips end events
- Sharing learning intentions and outcomes
- For reflection (see easily what they though and what they think now)
- Helps the teacher professional development
- …
WIKIS:
Are usually a web application which allows people to add, modify, or delete content in a collaboration with others. Text is usually written using a simplified markup language or a rich-text editor. While a wiki is a type of content management system, it differs from a blog or most other such systems in that the content is created without any defined owner or leader, and wikis have little implicit structure, allowing structure to emerge according to the needs of the users.

Advantages:
- For collaborative projects
- For planning and development of staff ideas
- Webquests
- As a classroom website and resource
- To build resource sites on topics
- …

VOICE THREAD:
Voice thread is basically a Web-based digital-storytelling application that allows users to share their stories through audio, images, videos or text. It also allows visitors to make comments on their stories in five different ways: 1) voice with a microphone, 2) or voice with telephone), 3) text, 4) audio file, or 5) video with a webcam. The stories can be shared with anyone in the world or they can be kept private for selected individuals.

Advantages:
- Literacy development
- Summarizing class discussion/research
- Learning languages
- Collaborative projects
- Showcasing and evaluating work
- Add information into images
